Romance Genre

There are various estimates of how many romance novels were sold in the last few years.  A generally accepted estimate is that in 2012, romance fiction generated $1.438 billion in sales in the United States — yes, Billion, with a “B”.

Sales of romance fiction is the largest share of the publishing market in the United States, accounting for 16.7 per cent of the market.  Romance sales are massively more than any other genre of literature, including religious or inspirational books, mystery novels, science fiction, and classic literary fiction.

Romance readers are unique in that they buy more books per year than readers of all other genres.  They also borrow more from libraries.  Romance readers are also a loyal bunch.  A recent survey revealed that forty-one per cent of romance book buyers have been reading romance novels for twenty years or more.
